About this Site
The Aristarchus region is the brightest and most geologically unusual place on the Moon. The crater itself blazes white against the dark surrounding lava plains — so bright it was mistaken for an active volcano by early astronomers. The Schröter's Valley rille nearby is a massive lava channel 160 km long and 11 km wide, carved by ancient rivers of molten rock. In 2024, an Optimus Explorer discovered a potential lava tube entrance on the plateau — a cave opening 30 meters wide that could provide natural radiation shielding for future habitats.
